Diabetes and Allied Diseases Research in India: a Growth Trend Analysis From

Bibliometrics is a type of research method used in library and information science which utilizes qualitative analysis and statistics to describe patterns of publications within a given field or body of literature. 'Bibliometrics for science policy and management' is a domain of research evaluation where the National, Regional and Institutional structure of science and their presentation are in forefront (Sri Amudha and Sevukan, 2014). Bibliometrics as a tool can be applied in any field of study. Diabetes is not exceptional. Diabetes affects millions of people and is a very serious lifelong health problem. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that nearly 200 million people all over the world suffer from diabetes and this number is likely to be doubled by 2030. In India, there are nearly 50 million diabetics, according to the statistics of the International Diabetes Federation. By 2030, India will have the largest number of patients in the world. Diabetes is not only a blood sugar problem, but brings along other complications as well. It is really a burning and serious issue to be addressed in developing countries like India. To prevent or minimize or eliminate the problem of diabetes, a meticulous and deep research is needed. Here the importance of research in diabetes comes to picture. It is not that research on diabetes is not conducted. It is being carried out throughout the year. But the amount of research done in this area is not so clear. The need for measurement of research in a particular field is important to make the country aware of the developments by measuring the research performance of its own scientists and researchers. In view of the above, the study is mainly focused on Indian research performance in the field of diabetes and allied diseases.
